Account book, 1814-1821.

Records the debits and credits accrued by Thompson Crowell between 1814 and 1821. The first part of the manuscript contains entries pertaining to the activities of those who performed work for Crowell from 1814 to 1818. Entries list credits received by individuals for a day's labor or such piecemeal tasks as "napping," making "castors," making bodies, and "bowing and planking" hats. Crowell distinguished between men's, ladies', youth's, children's, wool and small hats. Entries in the remainder of the volume document transactions between Crowell and his customers. In exchange for hats, Crowell received such items as cord, muslin, silk binding, paper, velvet, rabbits, glue, muskrats, bushels of rye, shoes, flour, coffee, sugar, food, and hat boxes along with such services as the stiffening and shipping of hats. He frequently exchanged items with Adam Lee, who appears to have operated a store.
